DAY 7: FRIDAY, 7 APRIL 2017 – MICHE BLAAUW: working on scenes

We continued our rehearsals outside on Day 7. For me, the outside performances were challenging and interesting at the same time.  The challenging part was to project your voice and the interesting part was to see how each scene got a new perspective once the environment is added to the scene.  My scene, the advertisement on Xenophobia, was done in a ruin of a building.  I thought how clever of the directors to choose this specific site.  First of all, it added a deeper satirical level to the already satirical advertisement, foreshadowing to the audience what the aftermath of xenophobia will be.  I really enjoyed my scene and I was very proud of it.  I wanted my mother to see this scene, but unfortunately, the weather did not allow us to perform it.

We polished all our scenes and to our surprise, it went quite fast.  Was it because the scenes were done separately and no links were required?  Links can sometimes take the entire day – which we did experience a day before our performance to an audience. The outside performance was great, but I missed the unity of a cast that one normally experiences when working on a production.  Our Drama teacher said that one cannot switch off while waiting to perform at your spot, so when I casted my energy to all the other scenes happening elsewhere on the grounds, I experience the sense of the tightness of a cast.

The evening at Gino’s was amazing.  The food on the camp was excellent and a highlight of the camp. Mrs Markram planned the camp to perfection because to be out at a restaurant after a long day of rehearsals in the sun, was really a good way to end the day.  The atmosphere at the restaurant, having slices of your friends’ pizzas was just great.  Funny, teenagers are the same all over the world – we all love pizza!

Drama Camp 2017 was an unforgettable experience.  I have never had so much fun and so many experiences in my life.  How lucky am I to have experienced this.
