DAY 4: TUESDAY, 4 APRIL 2017 – DANIELLE TOONTJIES: more drama!

Drama and Physical Theatre classes continued and this time the emphasis was on pair work and showing your work to the rest of the class.  In Drama we focussed on Stanislavski’s System and I really, for the first time, understood how to make better choices as an actor.  We were then divided into groups of two and we had time to rehearse a scene from a text on our own.  Our teachers went from group to group to assist us and I really appreciate this one-on-one sessions with them.

It was also fantastic to watch each group’s performance and discussing each scene.  I normally feel awkward when people discuss my work, but here I did not feel awkward or shy as it was done in such a professional way and all the feedback from my teachers and friends really helped me to develop my skills. The class was challenging but also lots of fun and so much laughter and enjoyment.

The Physical Theatre class was also structured in the same way, pair work and showing your work to the class. We had to choreograph a motif made up by a series of gestures.  Teachers again assisted each pair with each step of the process.

Every one contributed to this exercise and although the Germans did not have any training in Dance, they were as enthusiastic about it and never complained.  Once they realised that one does not have to be a dancer to be able to move, they relaxed and were inspired by this beautiful dance that was streamlined by our Dance teacher.  I think nobody thought that they would be able to create something as beautiful and uplifting as this.  For me, the choreography was the highlight of the camp.  The site- specific setting of the sandpit added another special touch to the dance.

In the afternoon, Mr Keeser, Carl Orff’s Music teacher presented the Music workshop and I really enjoyed singing together with everybody.  We also sounded well together and we studied an African song.  At first, the pronunciation of the words was difficult, but Khaya and Philasande helped us with the correct pronunciation.  After the strenuous Drama and Movement classes of the morning, the relaxing Music classes in the afternoon was a lovely break of just letting go and giving yourself over to the music.

Already within two days-time we have done a tremendous amount of work.  We were exhausted, but it was a good feeling, a sense of pride and achievement.
