DAY 9: SUNDAY, 9 APRIL 2017 – JAVONNE STEPHENS: our families

HIKING IN STELLENBOSCH MOUNTAINS

The experience on the mountain was amazing. We got up early and it was cold, but it did not diminish our enthusiasm.  The walk up the mountain was not strenuous at all, but rather a refreshing walk. The view from the top was breath taking. It was so good to be with friends at that time of the morning. It felt really special to me.  One of the leaners knee got injured during rehearsals, but she still continued hiking.  I thought how brave of her.  Some of us took turns to carry her.  After hiking in the mountain, there was a nice warm breakfast waiting for us at “home”.  A perfect start to the day.

ROUTE 44 MARKET

Wow! Wow! Wow! Route 44 is the place to be.  We had so much fun there.  The food, the clothes, the stalls and the souvenirs was amazing.  We really loved it there.  We bought typical South African gifts for our German friends.

MUIZENBERG BEACH

Although the wind was blowing, we had so much fun.  We played traditional South African children’s games, “Three Sticks” and “The Wolf”.

VISIT TO OUR HOME IN EERSTERIVIER

Our parents waited for us at our school and each one of us took a German student home for afternoon tea and cake.  All of us were very nervous about showing the Germans where we live.  As typical self-centred, self-absorbed teenagers we were concerned about family members not embarrassing us! I think the Germans appreciated it that they could see where we live and meeting our families.  It was a blessed afternoon and our parents’ excitement really surprised us.

When we returned home, we had the Germans and the South Africans had a separate feed-back session.  Each one told his story and we laughed at each other’s encounter, because it was such a perfect meeting, filled with laughter and fun.
